Australian visas for Indonesian partners and families

Want your Indonesian girlfriend, boyfriend, husband or wife to join you in Australia? Whether you are planning a visit, preparing to marry or looking at a future together, the first step is understanding which visa fits your circumstances.

OZVISA helps Australians with partner, family and visitor visa applications involving Indonesia. We offer clear advice, careful preparation and practical support, with attention to your relationship history, supporting documents and any previous visa difficulties.

Visitor visa for an Indonesian girlfriend or partner

A Visitor visa (subclass 600) may be suitable for a genuine temporary visit to Australia, including a holiday or time with a partner, friends or family.

The application needs to explain the purpose of the visit, how the stay will be funded and why the applicant will return home. An invitation and financial support from an Australian partner can form part of the evidence, but they do not guarantee approval.

A Visitor visa does not permit work. The visa grant letter sets out the allowed stay and conditions. Do not assume that a visitor can automatically remain in Australia or apply for a Partner visa after arriving.

Partner visas: building a life together

If you are married or in an eligible de facto relationship, a Partner visa may provide a pathway to living together in Australia.

The main options are:

  • Partner visa 309/100: for an applicant outside Australia when applying.
  • Partner visa 820/801: for an applicant in Australia when applying, provided they can make a valid application.

The sponsoring partner must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. Both the relationship and the other visa requirements need to be assessed.

Your location, current visa conditions and immigration history can affect your options. A “No Further Stay” condition, for example, can prevent an onshore application.

Engaged to an Indonesian partner?

The Prospective Marriage visa (subclass 300) is an option for eligible couples planning to marry. The applicant must be outside Australia when applying. It allows the holder to come to Australia to marry their prospective spouse, then apply for a Partner visa.

We can help you compare this option with the other pathways available to you.

Preparing your documents

Every application is different. Depending on the visa and your circumstances, relevant evidence may include:

  • Passports, identity documents and birth certificates.
  • Marriage, divorce or other relationship-status documents.
  • Evidence of time together, communication and shared commitments.
  • Financial records and arrangements for a proposed visit.
  • Documents relating to children and parental responsibility, where relevant.

Non-English documents need English translations that meet Home Affairs requirements. Provide copies of the original documents as well as their translations.

If you have children, a previous marriage, inconsistent names across documents or an earlier visa refusal, raise these issues at the start. They can affect the evidence needed and the approach to your application.

How OZVISA can help

We start with your circumstances and explain the options in plain English. We can help identify the evidence needed, prepare a well-organised application and respond to requests from Home Affairs.

Our advice focuses on what is appropriate for your situation. No migration agent can guarantee a visa outcome. The decision rests with the Department of Home Affairs.
